Walkers and dog owners reminded to be wildlife aware

Posted: February 24, 2012 - 1:04am

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game would like to remind users of the Mendenhall State Game Refuge that it is important to avoid disturbing wildlife.

According to a release from the department, there have been recent reports of waterfowl being chased by unleashed dogs on the wetlands.

With winter weather and reduced food supplies, waterfowl and wildlife in general need to conserve energy. Interactions with dogs and people are stressful for wildlife.

ADF&G is asking dog owners to keep dogs close and in control when walking on the Dike Trail and elsewhere on the refuge. Be aware that even leashed dogs resemble predators and may disturb wildlife. The department is asking wetlands walkers to keep an eye out for stray dogs when visiting the refuge.

Please call the ADF&G Douglas office at 465-4265, for more information.
