In a press release, officials with the U.S. Forest Service are reminding the public that the taking of cut trees for firewood at mile 25 of Glacier Highway is still off limits.
The release stated that the Department of Transportation has begun the third phase of road-widening work on Veterans’ Memorial Highway, beyond Eagle Beach. In the interest of public safety, the taking of firewood that has been removed by contractors clearing the right-of-way has been prohibited along this section of road. Cut trees will be staged at the gated 25-mile road and offered free as personal-use firewood by permit later this spring.
The release stated law enforcement will ensure public safety by patrolling the work area until Forest Service officials have issued public notice of the availability of the firewood.
