Moose program gets $1.5 million

ANCHORAGE — A program to relocate moose to keep them away from the state’s busier roadways is receiving an additional $1.5 million in state funding.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game issued an unprecedented permit to the Alaska Moose Federation, a nonprofit group that already has received more than a million dollars in state funding.

The Anchorage Daily News ( ) says the federation is gearing up now to move hundreds of moose next winter, perhaps even flying drugged moose plucked from urban areas to remote village areas where moose populations are low.

Alaska Moose Federation executive director Gary Olson says the new funding will be used to extend the program for up to five years. He says the federation hopes to move up to 100 moose next year.
