Maritime Festival postponed

Organizers of the 3rd Annual Juneau Maritime Festival, have decided to postpone the festival until Friday, May 18, due to forecasted high winds for Juneau and the Gastineau Channel.

In a release Friday from the Juneau Economic Development Council, organizers stated that the upcoming forecast raised concerns for the safety of festival participants on the waterfront.

The festival was originally scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. It is now scheduled for one week from today, from 3-9 p.m. at Marine Park and Plaza.

The forecast on the National Weather Service's website for Juneau stated that area residents can expect rain on Saturday with high temperatures around 47 degrees F.  Southeast winds are forecast to blow between 15 and 25 mph, decreasing to 10 to 15 mph late in the afternoon.

The release stated that “the decision to reschedule the festival ... was not an easy one to make, however, due to competing community events and limited availability of the venues on subsequent weekends, the festival planning committee concluded that this was the best option.”

A revised schedule of activities and special events for the festival will be released to the public as soon as possible, the release stated.
