Synopsis of the 2012 Southeast Alaska salmon derbies

Note: This is an unofficial listing of ports, dates, and leading fish.

• The unofficial winning fish of the Juneau Spring King Salmon Derby is 38.4 lb fish (cleaned and gilled) as of May 31. The derby runs from May 1 through May 31.

• Wrangell’s salmon derby started up May 12 and runs through June 10. The leading fish as of May 28 is 43.3 lbs (round weight).

• The Petersburg 4-day salmon derby started Friday, May 25, and wrapped up on Monday, May 28, with the unofficial winning fish being a 45.6 lb fish (in the round). The 309 Chinook salmon entered into the 2012 Petersburg derby is 8 percent below the recent 5-year average of 336 entered fish, and substantially lower than record 702 fish entered in the 2006 Petersburg derby.

• The Sitka salmon derby’s leading fish after the first weekend is a 41.4 lb fish (in the round), and a total of 276 fish were entered, which is 13 percent less than the recent 5-year average of 316 entered fish for the first weekend of the Sitka derby. The derby has one more weekend to go, and is on track for approximately 426 fish being entered for the entire derby.

• After the first weekend, the Haines salmon derby’s leading fish is a 30.4 lb fish (in the round), with 25 fish entered.

• Ketchikan’s salmon derby, with two weekends left to go, is being led by a 43.2 lb (in the round) king salmon, has had 197 entered fish (28 percent lower than the recent 5-year average of 273 fish for the first weekend of the derby), and is on track for approximately 585 fish being entered for the entire derby. The recent five-year average for the total number of derby entered fish for the entire derby is 825 fish.

• Pelican’s salmon derby occurs June 1-3 and June 8-10.

• Juneau’s Golden North Salmon derby will run Aug. 10-12.
