Trail dedication Saturday in honor of National Trails Day

Public invited to ribbon cutting on Under Thunder Trail

Posted: May 31, 2012 - 11:04pm

In honor of National Trails Day, Trail Mix Inc. is hosting a trail dedication event beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 2 on the Under Thunder trail in the Mendenhall Valley.

“National Trails Day is a national event,” Erik Boraas, executive director of Trail Mix, said. “We wanted to do our part.”

Morning events will essentially be a work party, Boraas said, to clear slash and logs from the sides of the trail. Volunteers, event participants and work crews will also be re-vegetating muddy areas of the trail. He said there should be something to do for all ability levels.

At noon, the official dedication will take place at the trailhead. Boraas said City and Borough of Juneau Parks and Recreation Director Brent Fischer, U.S. Forest Service District Ranger Marti Marshall and Trail Mix President Jack Kreinheder will likely share a few words. A ribbon cutting will follow.

After lunch and refreshments, afternoon activities will include guided nature walks and trail bingo for youngsters, Boraas said.

The event is not only for National Trails Day, it is also an effort increase use of the trail, he said.

“It’s a new trail, this is its third year,” he said. “We are trying to raise awareness about the completion of this first phase.”

The trail, which is wide enough for two-way bike traffic, connects the Trail of Time and the Powerline Trail to Jennifer Drive in the Mendenhall Valley. Boraas said it’s a great all-around-use trail and lacks steep grades and is suitable for many types of users. Phase two and three are still in the planning process, but he said those plans will include an extension of the trail toward Egan Drive.

In the meantime, Borass said the public is invited to get a little dirty, have some fun and help on local trails.
