Wildlife Roundup for the week of May 28, 2012

Posted: June 1, 2012 - 12:06am

Welcome to the second installment of Wildlife Roundup. The intent of this column is to provide Juneau residents updates on wildlife activity in the Juneau area and general interest wildlife information.

Local Black Bears: Black bear activity in Juneau continues to be steady with bears being sighted across town from Thane to Echo Cove. A substantial number of calls are coming from the area between Tee Harbor and Peterson Creek. The first reports of black bears in the downtown area and on Douglas were received last week. Many of the calls ADF&G are receiving are simply reports of bears in the area, but some involve bears getting into garbage and bird feeders, and even a hummingbird feeder. Residents are reminded to remove all attractants from their home and to secure household garbage in a bear resistant container until the day of pick up. In addition, any spilled bird seed, trash from the winter, etc. should be cleaned up and disposed of.

General Wildlife Hazards: ADF&G has received several calls concerning traffic congestion caused by motorists stopping on the side of the road to view wildlife, especially black bears. Please do not loiter in the area if a deer or bear is feeding along a road. This can create an unsafe traffic situation, and may alarm the animal which may move or run into traffic.
As vegetation emerges and ripens, black bears and deer have become more visible adjacent to local roads. Motorists should keep an eye out, especially early in the morning and at night, for animals feeding near the road as they may cross the road creating a hazard to motorists.

• For additional information, please contact the Douglas Area wildlife Office at 465-4359.

Look a bear...

Tour operators are the worst when it come to causing traffic hazards. There is even suspicion that they are baiting the bears in some locations, so that they can be sure to have something to show. I hope it's not true, but you know some will do anything for more tips!

Of course

Of course tour operators stop to see bears. I do, too (when it is safe - I don't slam on my brakes in the middle of the road) and especially when my kids are in the car. I'd make sure to stop w/ out-of-town guests, too.

It's exciting to see a bear, even if I've lived in SE for decades.

Why not share some of the awesome parts of our community with our visitors? As long as people are safe, seeing bears is a treat.

Speaking of traffic hazards....

Where do Gray Lines and Alaska Coach get their bus drivers?

Do they have any bus driving experience whatsoever, or
do they just get a quick lesson on how to BS the tourists about Juneau, and Alaska, and then get handed the keys?

Yesterday I had to drive up on the curb to avoid being sideswiped by one. Today I watched one come to a stop all the way across the crosswalk, and then held up traffic to cut cross two lanes, to turn left at Nugget intersection. To the drivers credit, he did signal his intentions, but he didn't stop talking.

Maybe they need to have the drivers drive, and someone else on the bus to do the chattering.

Guess that would cut too far into their profit margin??

Mosquitoes & Salmon

State birds are back and if this is going to be an informative column, I'd like to know if the salmon are hanging out at 15' or 40'.
