The U.S. Forest Service Juneau Ranger District is reminding locals this week that leashes are required at many local recreation sites.
All dogs must be on a leash at all times at the following developed recreation sites: Auke Village Recreation Area, Auke Village Campground, Lena Beach and the Mendenhall Lake Campground.
The leash requirement also applies to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center parking lots and areas surrounding the facilities, including the areas of Photo Point, the Nugget Falls Trail and the areas between these trails.
This requirement specifies physical restrictive control using a leash that is no longer than six feet.

It won't make any difference at all. Some people cannot be convinced that not everyone loves their "little darlings" as much as they. I was at Mendenhall last night when a huge Labrador off leash literally flattened my youngest daughter. I like dogs, but I hate owners who cannot be bothered to responsibly control and pick up after them. It's not the dog's fault. It is the owner's fault, and they should be cited.
Thanks USFS
May I commend the USFS for reminding dog owners about leash requirements in developed recreation areas. I am appalled by the way some residents seem totally oblivious to the existing regulations that currently prevail. In particular, the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area hosts more than 400,000 visitors annually and dogs running without being restrained can and does present a host of problems for the visitors to the area around the visitor center. Believe it on not, some people just don't feel comfortable when approached by a free running dog. Many of the visitors are elderly and can be easily knocked down by your well behaved Fido. There are also issues regarding harassment of wildlife and migratory birds that are cause for concern. My advise to Juneau dog owners is to find a place other than the developed recreation sites on the Juneau Ranger District to let your precious pets run free or set a good example for others and keep you dog on a leash. The alternative is a total closure to dogs. By the way, I failed to mention that the FS has been gracious enough to provide poop bags for picking up after your pet, why not give them a try? I strongly support the issuance of tickets by the FS in order to gain compliance with this problem.
