Members of Trail Mix Inc. and local volunteers got wet and muddy in the name of trails last weekend as part of a volunteer work day organized to help fill mud holes along the Treadwell Ditch Trail on Douglas Island.
Jack Kreinheder, Trail Mix board president, said the rain was certainly coming down, but that didn’t deter 13 volunteers and a handful of crew members from fixing up a few long stretches of mud-ridden trail on the section from Blueberry Hill to Gastineau Meadows.
Kreinheder said Temsco Helicopters donated $5,000 worth of helicopter time and helped to haul gravel last week in preparation for the work.
Besides hauling gravel into place, Kreinheder said crews built a 75- to 85-foot long log wall that now forms the downhill side of a turnpike. Workers then added some crushed rock as a base layer for drainage, and then covered the top with gravel.
Kreinheder said only a quarter of the gravel was flown up for this volunteer day due to weather delays. He said another volunteer day may be planned in the near future. Trail Mix will post the notification on their website, juneautrail.org, he said.
