Z.R. Cheney poses with a dead black bear he shot on Aug. 26, 1907, more than 100 years ago in Juneau. According to historical records, Cheney was an attorney in Douglas who at one point filed suite against the Treadwell Mining Company. For a time, he had a law office on the second floor of a building next to the Occidental Hotel and the Olympia Brewery in Juneau. According to court documents, Cheney took over the estate of the deceased Ole Linge, on March 13, 1905. In 1912, he worked as a delegate for the Democratic National Convention from the Alaska Territory. He died around 1919 in Juneau, though his burial location is unknown.
