Photographs highlight outdoor moments from the Juneau Empire archives

Juneau, we are lucky.

Our home is captivating, breathtaking and inspiring. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, really.

Every day, with our ever-changing weather, the scene outside my window takes on a new form. Yet, whether it’s blowing or bright and sunny, it’s always a shade of beautiful. Yes, we are lucky, I think.

Over the years, the Juneau Empire has been blessed with some amazing photographers. Most recently the work of Michael Penn has filled our pages and told stories of local events and individuals. Looking back, Brian Wallace’s work was a valuable fixture in the paper, as was the photography of Mark Kelley. All are gifted artists.

So to honor the art of photography and all the ways it’s captured the allure of Alaska in our paper, I figured it fitting to share a selection of images from the Empire’s archives. Most of these images are from the 1980s and highlight locals savoring Juneau’s rich outdoor world.

The cutlines are basic, I admit. Information was limited to little or nothing on the prints. The photos, however, tell the rest of the story. So sit back and enjoy this little trip back in time.

Thank you for reading.
