Locals are invited to participate in this year’s Christmas Boat Lighting Contest for a chance to win cash, prizes and, of course, bragging rights.
This is the second year for the contest, which is sponsored by the Juneau Chamber of Commerce, the Juneau Yacht Club, the Juneau Radio Center and the City and Borough of Juneau Docks and Harbors department. It’s a town wide contest in which boats in Aurora Harbor, Harris Harbor, Mike Pusich Douglas Harbor, Don Statter Harbor Facility and Fisherman’s Bend Marina are all eligible. In a release this week from CBJ Port Director Carl Uchytil, the eligibility location is not intended to be exclusive and any vessel in Juneau waters will be provided consideration, provided the judges are made aware.
Last year, the release stated that 20 vessels competed for $1,270 in cash and prizes in two categories: commercial/government and recreational. This year’s contest will feature the same categories. But there’s only a month left to get that boat spruced up; judging will be conducted by sponsor representatives from 5-10 p.m. on both Saturday, Dec. 22, and Sunday, Dec. 23. Criteria will include creativity, detail, Christmas spirit, luminescence and imagination. There is nothing to sign up for and only requires vessel owners to add some “Christmas Cheer” for the holidays. Cash and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each category on Monday, Dec. 24.
Richard Burns of the Juneau Radio Center indicated cash and prizes will exceed 2011 levels.
“Boaters aren’t necessarily in it for the money,” he said. “But certainly the bonus of prizes increases the competitive, fun spirit this contest provides to the Juneau community”.
Last year’s recreational grand prize went to Dan Gowdy with the Lady Irene in Aurora Harbor. The commercial grand prize winner was Matt Cole with Chan III in Harris Harbor. Each was awarded $100 cash and a $250 Willie’s Marine Gift Certificate $100 for their efforts.
“Decorating your boat is lots of fun and a great way for the boating community to show holiday spirit,” Commodore Richard Knapp of the Juneau Yacht Club said. “We are encouraging all JYC members to participate.”
