Get ready for the 2012 Christmas Bird Count

This year’s Juneau Christmas Bird Count will kick off on Wednesday, Dec. 12 and run through Tuesday, Dec. 18, according to the Juneau Audubon Society.

Members and participants will meet at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at both the Foodland IGA grocery coffee bar and at the McDonald’s restaurant across from the Nugget Mall. Those wishing to count in the downtown, Douglas, and north Douglas Island areas should meet at the downtown location. Those wanting to work the Lemon Creek, airport, Mendenhall Valley and Auke Bay areas should meet at the McDonald’s restaurant. Participants should be prepared for the weather and bring binoculars. Birders will be slotted into to the different groups at the staging locations on count day.

All count volunteers are invited to a potluck after the count at the home of Mark Schwan and Debi Ballam. The group plans to share the activities of the day, eat good food, and conduct the tally of birds and species seen. Directions will be provided on count day.

Wrangell Christmas Bird Count

Wrangell’s Christmas Bird Count will take place this year on Saturday, Dec. 29.

Organizers said they hope this post-Christmas date will enable more observers to participate. Their goal this year is to “cover as much of our water territory as possible.” When the weather is right, count boats can venture across Zimovia Strait and the Eastern Passage to cover Woronkofski and Etolin Islands, as well as a portion of the mainland. In years with poor weather, boats must hug the shoreline of Wrangell Island.

Sitka Christmas Bird Count

This year the Christmas Bird Count in Sitka will be held on Sunday, Dec. 30.

Organizers said they will try something different this year and have scheduled the planning meeting the day before the count for 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Raptor Center.

An after-birding gathering will happen at 4 p.m. at the Raptor Center on count day. Coffee, tea, and hot cocoa will be available. Participants may bring tally sheets and turn them in at this time, and find out what others saw during the count.
