Recreational fish stocking plan available for comment

The Alaska Division of Sport Fish is now accepting public comment on its statewide fish stocking plan.

The division, with assistance from private nonprofit hatchery operators, plans to benefit recreational anglers by releasing approximately 7 million fish into Alaska waters every year for the next five years. The stocking plan outlines the location, number, and size/life stage for each species of fish the department plans to stock.

Three Southeast communities are outlined in the plan — Ketchikan, Petersburg and Wrangell. Chinook salmon fry will be released annually in these areas to increase opportunities for anglers, the plan states.

Only fish from Division of Sport Fish hatchery facilities and from private nonprofit hatcheries which, in cooperation with ADF&G, produce fish to improve recreational fisheries are included in this plan.

The plan is posted on the agency’s website at: under “Hatcheries and Stocking.”

Copies of the plan are also available for review at Sport Fish management area offices.
