Santa plans annual visit to Eaglecrest

Posted: December 21, 2012 - 12:00am

It’s getting busy at Eaglecrest Ski Area this weekend as the mountain begins its holiday operation schedule and kicks off Christmas with a special visit from Santa.

There’s even still a few spots open in the Holiday Ski and Snowboard camps, Eaglecrest Director of Sales and Marketing Jeffra Clough said.

The local ski hill will be open every day — excluding Christmas — beginning today through Monday, Jan. 7. Lifts will run from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m. In addition, the Eaglecrest Snow Bus will also be running for those needing a ride to the slopes.

Christmas Eve festivities will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24, Clough said, with ornament decorating for kids. Music, featuring the sounds of Rick Trostel, will begin at 4:30 p.m.. Then, at 5 p.m., a torch parade for the “big” kids will begin on Hooter, followed by a second torch parade for the “little” kids on Porcupine. The event will culminate with Santa arriving on his sleigh, Clough said.

“There’s a little muskeg meadow above the Porcupine Chair. Santa’s reindeer love to nibble on the blueberry bushes,” she said.

Santa will then hitch a ride on a snow cat down the hill to give out presents to those on his “list.”

Clough said parents can get their child on the “list” by registering on the Eaglecrest website by Saturday, Dec. 22. The cost to register is $7. Roughly 70 kids participated in the event last year.

For those interested in learning how to ski or snowboard, the three-day camps begin on Wednesday, Dec. 26. Instruction is suitable for anyone ages four on up and Clough said there are still a few spots available in the first session.

“There’s still plenty of room in the second session,” she said.
