Crossing the Juneau Icefield the topic of Friday Fireside Lecture

Mike Hekkers, Franz Mueter, and Dan Lesh, with skis on their backs, hiked up Blackerby Ridge and twelve days later hiked down into Skagway. Ten of those days were white-outs with 55" of new snow. The trio will present at the upcoming Forest Service sponsored Fireside Lecture at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.

This week’s free Fireside Lecture, sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service, is titled “Juneau Icefield Crossing — Juneau to Skagway” and will feature a trio of local Juneauites who, with skis on their backs, hiked up Blackerby Ridge and twelve days later hiked down into Skagway.

The trekking team of Mike Hekkers, Franz Mueter, and Dan Lesh will lecture on many aspects of the adventure, including contending with whiteout conditions for a good portion of the journey; storms dropped roughly 55 inches of fresh snow on the trail over the course of the crossing.

The presentation, which begins tonight, Jan. 25, at 6:30 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, will feature stories from the journey, photos and touch on the challenges of navigating across this seldom-traveled route through the Lemon, Taku, Matthes, Mead, and Denver glaciers.
