UAS Sitka offers 'A Sense of Place: Alaska and Beyond'

Posted: February 22, 2013 - 12:03am

SITKA — This spring, the University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus is offering a Humanities S120 course called “A Sense of Place: Alaska and Beyond.” The class is team taught by Associate Professor of Marine Biology Jan Straley and former Alaska Writer Laureate and author John Straley.

This course meets from 6-8 p.m. on Thursdays from Feb. 28 through April 11, with additional times to be announced. This three-credit general education requirement class is available via distance delivery.

In this course, participants will study how humans have navigated and thrived in this world. Using readings and discussions, the course will investigate how humans became intellectually loyal to the particular places where they live (called “a sense of place”).

Students will also explore the works and life of renowned writer John Haines, a former Alaska Poet Laureate. They will also seek opinions from writers who knew or were influenced by Haines, including those with opposing views to his definition of a sense of place.

For more information and to register, call 747-7700 or go online at www.uas.alaska.edu/sitka. This class is limited to 15 students.
