Juneau Gun Club kicks off Doubles Trap League in April

For the fourth year in a row, the Juneau Gun Club will hold a one-month Doubles Trap League, scheduled this year to run through the month of April.

League action begins Wednesday, April 7 and is open to both JGC members and non-members.

Doubles Trap is when two clay targets (birds) are released from the trap house 16 yards from the shooter. The shooter then shoots from five different arched post positions, firing a total of 10 shots at 10 “birds” from each post. The spring doubles league will run for four weeks during open public shooting on Sundays. The doubles league targets will be 25 pair per shoot night (or 50 birds), shot on Trap 1.

This year’s event will differ from previous years, where the league was held during the club’s normal Wednesday night open shooting times. This year, the event will be held on Sundays, with a “make-up” or “shoot-ahead” allowed on Wednesday nights.

Last year, the event saw 15 participants, which was down from 20 shooters in 2010. If there are 20 or more participants this year, the club may also utilize Trap 4 for the doubles portion of the league. Entered members will be required to keep score for fellow shooters. “Shoot-ahead” and “make-up” shooting will be allowed with a league scorekeeper.

The entry fee per individual will be $20 for the month, plus weekly shoot cards. The total entry amount is required at the time of the first shoot on Sunday, April 7. The entry fee may also be paid when signing up for the league. Shooters will participate by four average score classes for doubles. The classes will be 85 and up, 75 to 84, 65 to 74 and less than 64.

The participant’s class will be determined after the second week of shooting, based on their average. The entry fee will be used for prizes. Winners of each class, plus a red lantern winner will receive a division of the entry fee.

A league sign-up sheet is available at counter at the outdoor shooting range on Montana Creek Road. The league officials are the JGC’s directors. If there are questions, contact one of the officials.
