Celebrate Earth Day 2013

Earth Day 2013 will be celebrated from noon to 3 p.m. at the Nugget Mall on Saturday, April 20. The event will be an environmental “teach-in” for children and adults.

There will be nature activities, crafts and face-painting for the young and information on our environmental issues for all.

SAGA will host a volunteer trash pick-up focused on the Jordan Creek area. Sign-ups for this will be at 12:30 p.m.

The All Nations’ Children dancers will perform at 1 p.m.

Tables will be staffed with information and demonstrations by the following organizations: Alaska Department of Fish & Game, Alaska Wildlife Alliance, CCTHITA, Dick Callahan, Discovery Southeast, Friends of Recycling, Juneau Audubon Society, Juneau Raptor Center, Juneau Urban Forestry Partnership, National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, Oceana and Turning the Tides.

Buckwheat Classic registration opens

Registration is now open for the 31st annual Buckwheat Ski Classic. The cross-country ski race will be held on March 25 on the Log Cabin Ski Trails north of Skagway and include 50K, 25K and 10K classic races as well as a 5K kids race.

Unit 4 fur season to end

The season for marten, mink, weasel and river otter in Unit 4 (Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof Islands) ended Wednesday. Beaver season remains open through April 30.

Geologist Jim Baichtal will discuss revising old theories regarding how life adapted to Southeast Alaska’s ancient ice sheets during today’s Fireside Lecture at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.
