JMR volunteers complete 4-day advanced rescue training

Folks who earned their turns in Eaglecrest Ski Area’s west bowl in last Sunday’s sunshine may have noticed some additional activity on the mountain as Juneau Mountain Rescue, Inc. practiced patient lowering systems. Volunteers with JMR recently completed a 30-hour rigging seminar with instructors from Rigging for Rescue out of Ouray, Colo.

While there was considerable classroom instruction, most of the seminar was spent completing field exercises that took place at the Treadwell Mine glory hole on Douglas Island, off the Mount Robert’s trail and at Eaglecrest Ski Area. The four-day training happened April 18 through 21 and was facilitated with a grant from Alaska Search and Rescue Association. JMR participants were joined by members of Eaglecrest and Alyeska Ski Patrols, as well as the Capital City Fire and Rescue Rope Team.

Over the course of four days, team members covered topics including raising systems, redirects, materials strength, lightweight descent control systems, anchoring concerns, and command and communication protocols.

“Advanced training opportunities like this take a lot of effort to put together and they can’t happen often enough,” one satisfied participant said. “As a team, we always try to keep abreast of the latest advancements in rope rescue techniques and these instructors have brought us a huge volume of material to digest and incorporate into our regular trainings.”

Others were just happy with the timing of the training, which just happened to coincide with a burst of sunny Juneau weather.

“We’re glad these guys brought their Colorado sunshine with them.”

JMR is a volunteer, nonprofit, educational corporation dedicated to providing technical search and rescue, outdoor rescue and safety training for the Southeast Alaska regional area, as well as nationally and globally as needed.
