Maritime Festival kicks off its fourth year on Sunday

The 4th Annual Juneau Maritime Festival, organized to celebrate Juneau’s maritime history, culture and commerce, will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Marine Park in downtown Juneau on Sunday, May 19.

This year’s festival includes more than 100 activities, acts and exhibits including live music, sailboat rides, vessel tours, seafood, a boat show, hands-on kids activities and a silent auction.

Culinary competitions at the festival include the 2013 Wild Alaska Marinade Contest and, new this year, the Smokin’ Hot Smoked Salmon Dip Contest. In addition, the popular Fillet Contest is back for 2013 giving fishermen and other experts a stage to show off their talents. Contestants will fillet both a salmon and a rockfish and will be judged on speed, quality, and the amount of useable meat recovered.

Non-culinary competitions include the Fish Tote Race, where fish totes act as row boats on the Gastineau Channel, and the Cruise Line Tug o’ War competition.

Festival organizers are still looking for volunteers and silent auction donations; contact 523-2300 or to find out more.
