Southeast Alaska Guidance Association and Alaska Geographic are hosting an all-expense paid trip for 10 Southeast Alaska teens to backpack the Chilkoot Trail. The hikers will be accompanied by National Park Service Rangers and will team up with NPS Trail Crew and Parks Canada Wardens along the way. The hike will take place Aug. 3-8, but the deadline for submissions is Monday, July 1.
To apply teens must submit artwork of their choice that expresses their interest in hiking the Chilkoot Trail. Applicants may submit a wide variety of art forms, but all must include contact information. Teens sending submissions must be between the ages of 14 and 18. The artwork should touch upon how the trip would benefit the applicant. Some examples include a drawing or painting with a brief description, a photo with description, a poem, short story or essay (none to exceed 2 pages), a recorded song or five-minute max length video. Travel for the trip will happen from Juneau on Aug. 2. The group will do return travel to Juneau on Aug. 9. The trip includes ferry travel, food, gear, train ticket, guided program and permit fees. Passport ID required.
