Juneau Gun Club events, results roundup

Four events. Participants are welcome to shoot all events or as many as time will allow. On both days, registration opens at 8:30 a.m. The first event will begin at 9:30 a.m, both days. On Saturday, the first event will be 200 Singles with the second event being 50 pair of Doubles. A BBQ will follow the second event. The steaks and/or chicken will be provided by the club. We ask the participants to bring a side dish (and booze if you wish to tip a few). On Sunday, the events will again start at 9:30 a.m. with all shooting 100 Handicap. The final event of the tournament will be 100 Singles.

Awards will be made at the end of each day’s shooting in four classes. There will also be a High Overall Award and a HOA Runner-up. Past President Tammy Kramer chose the awards from our pull-tab seller’s Viking Bar’s gift shop, Juneau Trading Co.

“I’m told the fish are not really biting as yet,” Malcom Menzies said, “So come on out to your club and join in the fun.”

On June 8-9, the Trap Shooting Division of the Whitehorse Rod and Gun Club is holding a two-day shoot. The program calls for a 600-bird event, with a BBQ on Saturday after the shooting ends. Several JGC members are currently planning on attending the Yukon Territory Trap Shoot. Their flyer will be posted at the club on Saturday.

The Alaska State PITA Trap Shoot will be held at the Fairbanks Trap Club on June 11-16. Many JGC members are planning to attend either part or all of this week of Trap Shooting. The program is posted at the JGC club house.

Regarding the tournament, each day at least 200 and at times, 300 birds are thrown.

“This is a great event, put on by a great and very friendly club membership,” Menzies said.

The winning winter league division teams are:

FIRE DIVISION - WARD AIR: Brian Buck, Jerry Godkin, Pete Hudson, Mal Menzies, Matt Roys, Mark Sams, Sam Smith, Ron Swanson, Ryan Ward, Floyd Wood.

WIND DIVISION - JNU MERCANTILE: Scott Borneman, Jason Boyer, Mary Boyer, Jim Collins, Bob Holmes, Dan Miller, Jake Miller, Derek Oliver, Sloan Swendsen, Jason Tarver

EARTH DIVISION - BUCK$HOT: Brian Blackwell, Curtis Blackwell, Chuck Cohen, Craig Dahl, Jay Halverson, Doug Larson, Joe Mueller, Mark O’Brien, Tom Sullivan, Dennis Watson, Mike Whisenaut

In the shoot-off between Division-winning teams, Team Juneau Mercantile and Armory forfeited, as many of their members were on a bear hunt. Ward Air and Buck$hot competed in a handicap shoot devised by Forest Bowers, where two shooters stood per post with each shooting at a scorer-released bird, while dressed in skirts, provided by Anita Watts and Mona Yarnell.

Team Buck$hot, shooting from the 20-yard line beat team Ward Air, shooting from the 22-yard line by a “few” birds.

The individual winter league awards award included: High Gun, from Ward Air, Pete Hudson; High Lady, from Montana Creek Homes, Lindsey Birk; High Junior, from Glacier Psychos, Jared Markovich; High Sub-Junior, from Kappler Computer Services, Thomas Kappler; High Senior, from Ward Air, Mal Menzies; Most Consistent, from Ward Air, Pete Hudson; Most Handicapped, from BTO Muchachas, Amy Dieffenbacher and Most Improved, from BTO Muchachas, Yumi Arimitsu.

Two special awards were made to Roy Martin and Mark Kappler. They were presented with their very own towels, so they would stop taking home the club’s first shooter in a squad towel.

DOUBLES LEAGUE: The one-month doubles league awards were also made the evening of the club member’s diner and BBQ. Fifteen shooters participated in this early spring league with 12 shot-gunners finishing. The grand winner was Jay Davis shooting 175/200, edging out the runner-up Pete Hudson by three dead birds. The Lewis Class winners were “Bud” Burnett and Larry Semmers. The Red Lantern Award went to first time double shooter Jerry Godkin.
