Arizona Girl Scouts visit Juneau

Ryan Yount, Alexandra Gutierrez, Abigail Kany, Rebecca Kim, Nora Wagnern and Ashley Ong smile at one of the overlooks near the top of Mount Roberts this summer. The girls are part of a Girl Scout Troop from Phoenix, Arizona who raised moeny to make the trip to Juneau this year.

Girl Scouts from Phoenix, Arizona, Troop 2292, saved all their cookie money for three years to travel to Juneau and this summer their goal became a reality.

Troop Leader Debra Gutierrez said the girls “earned every penny to spend a week enjoying a variety of activities in Juneau.”

She wanted to extend a special thanks to St. Brendan’s Episcopal Church for allowing the girls to stay at the church.

Gutierrez said it was especially meaningful for one of the girls because her grandfather, the late Rev. Charles Adams, was instrumental in building the church.

The girls checked out many of the popular haunts, such as the Mount Roberts Tramway and the Mendenhall Glacier.


Buckwheat Classic registration opens

Registration is now open for the 31st annual Buckwheat Ski Classic. The cross-country ski race will be held on March 25 on the Log Cabin Ski Trails north of Skagway and include 50K, 25K and 10K classic races as well as a 5K kids race.

Unit 4 fur season to end

The season for marten, mink, weasel and river otter in Unit 4 (Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof Islands) ended Wednesday. Beaver season remains open through April 30.

Geologist Jim Baichtal will discuss revising old theories regarding how life adapted to Southeast Alaska’s ancient ice sheets during today’s Fireside Lecture at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.
