Looking for a reason to get out on the trails? Trail Mix Inc. and the U.S. Forest Service are in need of about 100 volunteers to spread more than 60 tons of gravel on the Auk Nu Trail as part of a volunteer work day beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.
According to organizers with Trail Mix, most of the plank trail has been removed, and 80 bags of gravel must be emptied into turnpikes along the newly-improved trail. Volunteers are also needed to help revegetate the work areas with moss afterward.
Interested in helping out? Head out on Spaulding Meadows Trail and turn left at the Auk Nu Trail intersection. The work area is about 1.5 miles from the trailhead; signs will be posted. Bring weather and work appropriate shoes, gloves, outdoor gear, food and water. Trail Mix will provide gloves and tools to people without them.
Because of limited parking at the trailhead, volunteers are encouraged to park in the upper parking lot at the Auke Bay Bible Church.
