A summer of sunshine culminates at weekend annual food festival

The 2013 annual Farmers Market and Local Food Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center.

The event will feature how-to workshops and the largest local farmer’s market of the year, with more than 25 vendors from around Southeast.

New this year in Juneau is “Chef at the Market,” a statewide program that began in 2011 through the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Agriculture, as a way to bring attention to locally grown produce at markets.

On Saturday, Chef Gerry Donohoe will purchase fresh produce from local vendors and demonstrate ways to cook the food, as well as share his recipes.

Also on Saturday will be a variety of workshops, including: Making Sauerkraut with Sarah Lewis (9:15 a.m.); Gardening with Kids with Darren Snyder (10 a.m.); Kitchen Medicine with Dr. Emily Kane (10:45 a.m.); Pest Management with Lois Dworshak (11:30 a.m.); and Over Wintering Plants with Ed Buyarski (12:15 p.m.)

As always, the event is free and open to the public. Vendors, however, are required to pay a fee to participate. For more information, visit www.jahc.org.
