Eaglecrest in Powder Magazine's 'Ski-Town Throwdown'

Facebook voting face-off happening on Monday
A page from the latest issue of Powder Magazine details the write-up given to Eaglecrest Ski Area as part of this year's Ski Town Throwdown, in which ski areas are matched against each other to determine, through reader votes, which one is the best.

Eaglecrest Ski Area has made it into the internationally-read Powder Magazine’s “ski-town throwdown,” an event pairing off ski areas around North America in a voting battle for bragging rights, publicity and, ultimately, visitors.

Eaglecrest will face Whistler Blackcomb, in British Columbia, next Monday, Oct. 28, in a Facebook face-off. The winner will advance to the next of five levels and face another ski area in another battle.

Powder Magazine’s preview of Whistler Blackcomb vs. Eaglecrest calls it “a classic acronym battle of B.C. vs. A.K.”

“This is the abominable snowman [Whistler Blackcomb] versus the bumble [Eaglecrest] from those Claymation Christmas movies we all loved as kids. If you’ve ever headed to the East Bowl Chutes, you know that the snow is flying and the bros are high-fiving,” it says. It also calls the East Bowl Chutes “the most underrated terrain on the mountain for pow stashes.”

Jeffra Clough, Eaglecrest’s Director of Sales and Marketing, said they’re excited about the national attention for the ski area and for Juneau as a whole.

“We’re trying to get the word out that Eaglecrest is also on the scene. It’s got amazing terrain and amazing scenery,” she said.

The print version of the article also includes a breakdown of Eaglecrest’s annual snowfall (350 inches), lift ticket price ($45), vertical (1,540 feet) and acreage (640). Whistler Blackcomb has more than 8,100 acres. It competed last year but did not advance past the first round.

“We’re obviously much smaller than Whistler but we’re very well loved in the community and in the industry. I think people look at Eaglecrest to be — it’s a gem. We aren’t to be taken lightly. We have a very strong use of very loyal followers. We’re hoping we can get past the first round and beat Whistler,” Clough said.

Eaglecrest is ranked 27th out of 64 ski areas in a point system that factors in lift ticket prices, crowds and snowfall.

“This is a great opportunity not just for Eaglecrest, but also for Juneau — because it does bring awareness to the community of Juneau as well,” Clough said. “It makes a statement that we’re starting to be recognized as a possible winter destination as well [as a summer destination] for travelers.”
