Get snow savvy at avalanche workshop

The public is invited to attend the Southeast Alaska Snow and Avalanche Workshop from 5-10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center.

The event will feature lectures and work sessions on avalanche safety. Talks will include speakers such as Dave Hamre, with the Alaska Railroad, Ron Simenhois from Kensington, Mike James from AEL&P, the Yukon Avalanche Association talking about Haines and White pass, speakers from the National Weather Service, Bill Glude with Alaska Avalanche Specialists, UAS, CBJ, and more.

The goal of the event, according to a post on the group’s Facebook page, “is to help develop a local ‘culture of safety’ while ripping and riding the mountains of Southeast Alaska.”

“Come on out and get your Avi on while learning and growing as we develop a society of mentorship, safety education and loving our local mountain life,” the post stated.

The event is open to all — whether a local shredder or an avalanche industry worker — the event promises to have something for everyone.
