North Fork Katlian River area closed to mountain goat hunting

SITKA — Biologists have called for an emergency closure of the mountain goat hunt on the North Fork of the Katlian River a portion of the Unit 4 registration goat hunt (RG150), effective on Tuesday, Dec. 24.

In a release from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, biologists have set a maximum guideline harvest objective of four male or one female mountain goat for the area. High harvests of goats in this area in previous years have prompted this conservative harvest strategy.

As of Monday, Dec. 23, two male goats and one nanny have been harvested. Because the female guideline harvest has been met in this area, the emergency order was issued to restrict the harvest to the guideline level, and to prevent overharvest in this area. Any additional harvest could have long-term negative effects on this goat population, the release stated.

Unless previously closed by emergency order, all other Unit 4 mountain goat regulations remain unchanged and are not affected by this action. For additional information, please contact the Sitka area ADF&G office at 907-747-5449.
