Avalanche safety, awareness clinics this weekend

The public is invited to a pair of free avalanche awareness courses taught by local experts on Saturday and Sunday at Eaglecrest Ski Area.

According to Tom Mattice, City and Borough of Juneau emergency coordinator, the Saturday course runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will focus on evaluating the stability of snowpack, as well as companion rescue skills training. The course is geared toward those looking to gain a basic understanding of avalanche safety. 

Sunday's course runs from 1-3 p.m. at Eaglecrest and will feature a rescue skills clinic geared toward individuals already familiar with avalanche awareness. Instructors will also offer a refresher course on how to use an avalanche beacon and probe.

Buckwheat Classic registration opens

Registration is now open for the 31st annual Buckwheat Ski Classic. The cross-country ski race will be held on March 25 on the Log Cabin Ski Trails north of Skagway and include 50K, 25K and 10K classic races as well as a 5K kids race.

Unit 4 fur season to end

The season for marten, mink, weasel and river otter in Unit 4 (Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof Islands) ended Wednesday. Beaver season remains open through April 30.

Geologist Jim Baichtal will discuss revising old theories regarding how life adapted to Southeast Alaska’s ancient ice sheets during today’s Fireside Lecture at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.
