Running around Douglas Island

Tristan Knutson-Lombardo poses atop a rock outcropping on the backside of Douglas Island in early June. Knutson-Lombardo and Bryce Iverson ran around Douglas Island, beginning with a 14-mile road run and ending with pizza at the Island Pub.

Around the beginning of June, Bryce Iverson and Tristan Knutson-Lombardo ran around Douglas Island.

“We did the entire island,” Iverson wrote in an email. “(We) started with a 14-mile road run and finished with a pizza at the Island Pub. After the pizza we moved a mattress for a friend, and I had an unplanned nap in the bed of my pickup; its the farthest I’ve ever run before.”

The pair saw all the similar sights of beach running in Southeast — barnacle-covered rocks, some covered in seaweed, drifting sand and beach grass.

“The most interesting was running alongside the boats trolling out (in the channel) for kings,” Iverson wrote. “(It was) probably not a sight they expected to see; a few honked at us and mostly everyone waved.”

Iverson said he’s often surprised at what can be done in a day in and round Juneau — there’s many amazing sights to see and epic sites to visit.

What’s most important, of course, is attempting these types of adventures with safety in mind. Set a trip plan and share it. Carry a GPS device with you and travel with a partner. And always, dress for the weather.
