One of the most popular perennials in the garden, Hosta fills a wide range of niches in garden beds with its diversity of form. “Sum and Substance” is the king of the cultivars readily available and grows up to 5 feet across and 3 feet tall. Its enormous chartreuse, heart-shaped leaves are perfect for adding color and texture to the landscape. The light purple flowers bloom on 36-inch-tall scapes during the height of summer. All Hosta grow best here in Juneau with moist, well-drained, enriched soils in part shade to full sun.
• “What’s in Bloom” is a regular feature that runs during the year’s warmer months and features blooming plants at the city-owned Jensen-Olson Arboretum.
