What's in Bloom: 'The Rocket'

"The Rocket" is a wonderful summer-blooming perennial that seems to have been designed exclusively for Juneau's cool, wet climate. In late July, spikes of bright, lemon yellow, daisy-like flowers on black stems grow to more than 6 feet tall and bloom through late August.

Ligularia stenocephala, “The Rocket” is a wonderful summer-blooming perennial that seems to have been designed exclusively for Juneau’s cool, wet climate.

In late July, spikes of bright, lemon yellow, daisy-like flowers on black stems grow to more than 6 feet tall and bloom through late August. Its bold, toothed foliage wilts in more southern climes on warm, sunny summer afternoons — something that rarely happens here in cloudy Southeast. “The Rocket” is not a plant for small gardens as it forms clumps that can be more than 4 feet across with leaves up to one foot across.

• “What’s in Bloom” is a regular feature that runs during the year’s warmer months and features blooming plants at the city-owned Jensen-Olson Arboretum.
