Tuberous begonias are one of Juneau’s best choices for an attractive container plant that provides non-stop bloom from late spring until frost. Colors available include shades of pink, red, yellow, orange, white and salmon. They grow best in a pot or hanging basket kept in partial shade with a well-drained potting mix that stays moist. The tuberous roots can, with a little care, be kept for years to enjoy again and again; they must be brought inside for the winter. Storage tips can easily be found on the internet. Despite their tropical origins, they bring a seasonal bright spot to our rainforest gardens.
• “What’s in Bloom” is a regular feature that runs during the year’s warmer months and features blooming plants at the city-owned Jensen-Olson Arboretum.
