Papaver somniferum, or “Lauren’s Grape,” is a delightful form of bread seed poppy that was painstakingly selected over the course of several years by noted Colorado horticulturist and lecturer Lauren Springer. She diligently pulled every plant that wasn’t a deep, rich purple from her original seed source until the population grew with a uniform color. As an easy-to-grow annual, simply scatter seed in early spring in your desired location and then wait for the show to begin. Seed can then be saved each fall for next year’s garden.
• “What’s in Bloom” is a regular feature that runs during the year’s warmer months and features blooming plants at the city-owned Jensen-Olson Arboretum.
