The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center will be closed today in commemoration of Veterans Day. The center will reopen on Saturday for its 10 a.m.-4 p.m. winter hours.
Until March, the MGVC will be open Friday-Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission to the MGVC and the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area will be free of charge until March.
The Discovery Southeast bookstore, located inside the center, will be open during winter hours throughout the winter. The local nonprofit opened in May.
USFS staff will host special programs throughout the winter months. In November and December, center staff will conduct on-site conservation education trips for elementary school students. Fees collected during summer will assist with transportation between area schools and the visitor center.

The popular Fireside Lecture series returns on Jan. 12 and continues through March 30. The Friday night presentations are held at the MGVC, with two showings at 6:30 and 8 p.m.
In conjunction with Capital City Fire and Rescue, the Forest Service will hold an ice safety workshop and demonstration on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1:30 p.m. This annual tradition educates citizens on safe practices during winter and rescue techniques in the event of falling through lake ice.
