Master gardener training registration open

Master gardener training that begins Feb. 7 in Juneau will teach participants how to design, plant, and maintain a successful garden in Southeast Alaska.

Classes will meet from 6-9 p.m. most Wednesdays through May 16 and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on April 21 and May 5. The sessions will take place in the Juneau district office of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, at 450 Whittier St. Agriculture and horticulture agent Darren Snyder, other Extension staff, and local experts will teach the classes.

The session will offer in-depth training to experienced gardeners on a variety of topics, including botany, soils, vegetable production, greenhouses, lawns, trees/shrubs, flowers and invasive plants. Trainees can then share their skills with the community through various service projects and other venues.

The fee is $300, of which $150 will be refunded if a trainee volunteers for at least 40 hours within a year. The fee includes a copy of the “Alaska’s Sustainable Gardening Handbook.” Registration is available online at http://bit.ly/MasterGardener2018. For more information, contact Susie Wilkie at 523-3280 or susie.wilkie@alaska.edu.
