Couple recount blizzard ordeal

Posted: February 28, 2011 - 10:17am

FAIRBANKS — A Fairbanks couple says being stuck in deep snow in the White Mountains was a terrifying experience.

Elizabeth and Jonathan Jachim are among three couples who were rescued last week from the White Mountains National Recreation Area north of Fairbanks after their snowmobiles got stuck in deep snow.

The Jachims say they tried to stay positive, but it was hard to not let bad thoughts creep into their thoughts when night fell and temperatures dropped to 20 below zero.

They told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner they were shivering even with their cold-weather gear on, a sign that hypothermia was setting in.

Bureau of Land Management rangers found the Jachims early Wednesday morning after they were reported overdue.
