Interior Department opens climate science center

Posted: February 28, 2011 - 10:17am

ANCHORAGE — The Interior Department has opened the first of eight regional climate science centers, a facility in Anchorage hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Water and Science Anne Castle says the facility will tie into university resources and tap other existing capacities to provide scientific data, tools and techniques that can help manage resources in a changing climate.

The department says none of the regional centers is meant to replace existing agencies or jurisdictions but will identify gaps that exist in how climate change and other landscape-scale stressors are affecting a region.
