Salmon fry killed at Prince of Wales hatchery

Posted: March 3, 2011 - 1:30pm

An unknown person turned the fresh water supply off at the Prince of Wales hatchery sometime either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, killing nearly all the king salmon fry there, according to a release from the Alaska State Troopers.

The person entered the building between 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday. State troopers arrived on scene at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to begin an investigation. The lack of fresh water caused the oxygen levels in the existing water to drop, resulting in the death of 98 to 99 percent of the fry.
