That little salmon that's way below prize-weight might not seem like much to you, but to the Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation, it's part of their reason for, year after year, working hard to get prizes, participants, and perfect fishing weather for the Golden North Salmon Derby.

Because while the Golden North Salmon Derby is an amazing opportunity for the whole family to get out on the water and enjoy the marvellous fishing that Southeast Alaska offers, it's so much more than that. Every year, the he Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation, and its parent, Territorial Sportsmen, Inc., awards scholarships to graduating Juneau-Douglas High School seniors for further studies. Since 1953, the foundation has awarded a total of $1,064,000 to 201.

The 2002 recipients are Gregg Albrecht, Brett Fairchild and Eric Pedersen, who were each awarded a $10,000 scholarship for a four-year academic degree program at an accredited university or college. Vocational scholarships were presented to Nick Foster ($2,000) and Matt Laramie ($1,000).

Recipients are selected based on their participation in fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities, scholarship, community activities and commitment to the goals of Territorial Sportsmen, Inc.
