Klukwan and Metlakatla kicked off M Bracket action in the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament on Monday, and it was Klukwan that showed little rust with a 93-60 win at Juneau-Douglas High School.

This one was over by halftime as Klukwan had already run the score to 45-26 by the break, and the team from Metlakatla — a fill-in for the Anchorage team that didn’t make the tournament — never made it back into the game.

Chris Wassaman and Rob LaRose led the way for Klukwan with 29 and 25 points, respectively, and teammate Rick Ackerman pitched in 14 of his own.

Metlakatla’s Randy Hayward led the way for his team with 23 points, while Leon Aceveda contributed 11.

Juneau Filco rolls on

It was a good second day for Juneau Filco in C Bracket action Monday afternoon at the Gold Medal Tournament as the hometown team recorded yet another convincing victory, 77-58 over Yakutat.

Juneau was able to build a 12-point lead by halftime, 41-29, and Yakutat could not respond the rest of the way as it was outscored 36-29 in the second half. Juneau played a consistent, well-balanced offensive game as five players scored in double figures.

Ruther Echiverri scored 18 points to lead the way for Juneau Filco, Franz Kugelmann scored 14, Chris LeVallee had 12 and Al Tagaban and Rob Carpenter each had 10.

Ralph Johnson and Gary Klushkan were the only scorers in double figures for Yakutat with 20 and 12 points, respectively.

Kake pulls away late

The Kake Tlingit Heat have developed a fool-proof plan when the game’s on the line: Get the ball to Rudy Bean.

Huna Totem erased a 13-point halftime deficit to pull in front of Kake, 76-75, on a Kamal Lindoff layup with 4:30 remaining in the game. But just as he’s done so many times before in the Gold Medal tournaments past, Bean hit a pull-up 3-pointer to put his team on top for good and the Tlingit Heat won 88-83 in the second round of the 65th edition of the tourney Monday afternoon at JDHS.

Kake finished the first half on an 8-0 run to push its lead to 54-41 at the break, but that 13-point deficit was the largest the Totem faced all afternoon. Huna went on a 17-4 run to tie the game 58-58, and eventually pulled in front, 68-67, at the eight-minute mark before Lindoff gave his team its last lead nearly four minutes later.

Bean scored nine of his 39 points in the final 2:47 to ice the game.

Bean’s 39 points led all scorers. Teammates Nick Davis, Jay Peterson and David Watkins pitched in 15, 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Lucas Johnson led Huna with 24 points, Kamal Lindoff and Tierny Bible had 16 apiece and Showalter Martin scored 15 points.

Bible, who was a beast on the boards for Huna, fouled out with just over two minutes remaining, leaving the Totem with a void in the middle down the stretch.

Haines slides by Hoonah

Haines advanced to Thursday’s winner’s bracket quarterfinals of the B Bracket after eeking out a 79-78 win over Hoonah on Monday.

Haines rallied from a 45-38 halftime deficit to get by Hoonah.

Tyler Healy led Haines with 27 points and Jesse McGrew added 20. Andrew Friske chipped in 18 points for Haines, which faces defending B Bracket champion Angoon at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Angoon knocked off Yakutat 85-63 on Monday.

Haines shot just 11 of 20 from the free throw line while Hoonah made 17 of 22, but Haines knocked down 10 3-pointers to Hoonah’s six.

Travis Dybdahl led Hoonah with 27 points. Anthony Lindoff, David Lindstrom and Mike Schneeburger each scored 14 points in the loss.

Yakutat will face the winner of Tuesday’s Hydaburg-Kake matchup at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday for a chance to get back into the title hunt.
