Yakutat ousts Metlakatla from Masters tourney

Yakutat rolled to an 82-60 win in Wednesday’s afternoon Masters Bracket contest against Metlakatla, but it wasn’t as easy as the final score suggested.

It took a while to wake up, but Yakutat turned a 34-32 halftime lead into a blowout after outscoring Metlakatla 48-28 in the second half to send it home early in the 65th Annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament.

Yakutat buried 13 triples on the day, including eight in the second half, on its way to the convincing victory and a trip to the next round of the loser’s bracket to face Wednesday’s late game between Kake and Klukwan.

Joe Klushkan led all scorers with 18 points for Yakutat, including four 3-pointers, with teammate Bert Adams pitching in 17.

Randy Hayward led the way for Metlakatla with 17 points.

Yakutat meets the winner of Wednesday’s late game between Kake and Klukwan, which did not finish by press time, today at 12:30 p.m.
