Falcons’ Hansen enjoys the study of people

Thunder Mountain girls’ soccer season kicks off Friday

The Thunder Mountain girls’ soccer season kicks off on Friday as they take on crosstown opponent JDHS. Falcon’s senior center back Destry Hansen works to defend the TMHS goal against the opposition, but in her free time she likes to read, draw and has a strong interest in the social sciences.

What is it about soccer you really like?

“My entire mom’s side of the family plays soccer. You start at an early age, and you play until you can’t play anymore. I’ve just been surrounded by it my entire life.”

How do you like to spend your free time when you’re not playing soccer?

“I’m really into drawing and a lot of art stuff. I like sketching people, sometimes animals, but mostly portraits. I do pencil mostly. My sophomore year, I took a drawing class and a painting class, and I took drawing classes at Festival. Ever since I was little, I’ve just been doodling things, and I’m just constantly drawing. I also read a lot of books. I like historical fiction as well as fantasy and sci-fi. But I spend most of my time just hanging out with my friends.”

What are your academic interests?

“I really like the social sciences like psychology and sociology, as well as history and things similar to that. Those are the classes I’ve clung to the most. I’ve never been as interested in math or the lab sciences. I just like the study of people more than the study of things.”

What’s your plan for next year?

“I’m enrolling in a bachelor’s program for anthropology at UAF.”

What kinds of things will the team need to improve on from last season?

“Last year we struggled on offense, but this year we have some new players with more experience. I’m hoping there should be an improvement there.”

Talk about what it’s like to play Juneau-Douglas, a program that’s known as a traditional powerhouse.

“It’s kind of rough because they have a tradition of being really good at sports. We definitely learn a lot from those games, and if we can just hold them off from scoring for a while, it feels pretty good.”
