The Gastineau Channel Little League 9-10-year-old All-Stars competed in a District 2 tournament July 8-12 in Petersburg, finishing third overall after defeating Wrangell in the consolation game.
Ketchikan, Petersburg, Juneau, Wrangell, Prince of Wales and Sitka all competed in the tourney, with Ketchikan earning a 16-3 win over Petersburg in the championship game.
Juneau knocked off Sitka 16-2 in its opener before falling to Ketchikan 5-2. Juneau then rolled to an 18-1 win over Wrangell.
“The boys played very well,” manager Mike Lesmann said. “They battled hard for four innings against the Ketchikan crew. Ultimately, it was the more mature and experienced team that prevailed. We gave up three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth and Ketchikan played error-free baseball the entire game.
“It was a great tournament,” he continued. “Thank you to the beautiful city of Petersburg, its Little League Board and the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church for the hospitality we received and the fun times we experienced during the weekend.”
Pitching duties were distributed to Jake Williamson, Gabe Storie, Kolby Hoover, Logan Lesmann and Bobby Cox throughout the tourney. Several players contributed to a 36-run production total and Chris San Nicolas added an inside-the-park home run during one of the games.
