Juniors take 2-0 series lead

Juneau’s Gastineau Channel Little Leauge Juniors All-Star team took a 2-0 series lead Monday with a 6-1 win over Far North in the best-of-5 state championship series in Craig.

Juneau scored twice in the first inning and four times in the third, allowing one run in the sixth. Juneau had six hits and three walks on offense, and the defense backed up starter RJ Markovich with no errors.

Markovich picked up the win, pitching 5 1-3 innings, giving up just three hits and striking out seven with four walks.

Jacob Thibodeau went 2-for-3 at the plate and made a big defensive stop at first base. Jack Withington had a hit, an RBI and scored two runs, Nathan Klein had a hit, an RBI and scored a run, Collin Ludeman had a hit, an RBI and scored a run, Grant Ainsworth had a base hit for an RBI, and Matt Cuningham and Kaleb Thompkins each scored a run for Juneau.

Jared Markovich pitched in relief for Juneau, going 1 2-3 innings and striking out four hitters while giving up no hits and no walks.

Game 3 is today at 5 p.m. as Juneau attempts to close the series out. The series winner earns a Western Regional berth.
