Majors state tourney begins today in Juneau

Juneau’s Gastineau Channel Little League Juniors All-Star team made it a clean sweep of Far North on Tuesday, winning the best-of-5 state baseball tournament in Craig and a Western Regional berth in the process.

Juneau overcame five errors in the field to lock up a trip to Irvine, Calif., with a 13-7 win.

Juneau took a 5-0 lead with a two-run second innig and a three-run third, with the lead ballooning to 10-3 after 5 1/2 innings. Far North would close the gap with a four-run sixth, but Juneau added three more runs in the seventh and shut Far North down in its final at-bat.

Juneau was the beneficiary of 13 walks while racking up 10 hits, with Jared Markovich, Nathan Klein and Grant Ainsworth getting two each, including a solo home run by Klein.

Jared Markovich also had three RBIs and a walk. Kenny Fox walked twice, had two RBIs and scored a run, Matt Cunningham scored three times, Michael Dale and Jacob Thibodeau each scored twice.

Jack Withington scored the win, giving up six runs, two earned, on six hits with four strike outs and four walks. Juneau committed five errors, and only two of Far North’s runs were earned.

The Western Regional Tournament is Aug. 2-9 in Irvine, Calif., and Juneau is in Pool A with Idaho, Hawaii, Arizona, Utah and host Laguna Niguel.

SB Majors drop opener

The GCLL Juniors fell 4-3 to Nunaka Valley in the opener of their best-of-5 Junior League Softball State Championships series at Anchorage’s Albrecht Field.

Rachel Roldan scored twice for Juneau, which took an early 1-0 lead.

Nunaka Valley countered with three runs in the bottom of the first and held on for the win.

Kayla Balovich and Savannah Schauwecker each had RBI doubles for Juneau.

Game 2 is today at 7 p.m. and the series winner earns a bid to the Western Regional Tournament, held in Tuscon, Ariz.

Majors state tourney begins today

Juneau’s Majors All-Stars begin their quest for a Western Regional bid today against Anchorage’s Abbott-o-Rabit Little League at 6 p.m. at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.

The best-of-5 series runs today through Sunday if necessary. The schedule of games is listed on B2.
