Bears bounce back

Campos scores three touchdowns to lead JDHS to 39-13 win

Demetrius Campos scored three touchdowns as Juneau-Douglas rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 39-13 win over visiting Notre Dame on Saturday at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.

Campos returned a punt and a kickoff for scores and then caught a touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to help propel JDHS to its fifth victory of the season.

The Crimson Bears and Jugglers, out of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, slogged through a sloppy, flag-filled first half without many fireworks until JDHS quarterback Phillip Fenumiai crossed the goal line from a yard out at the 3:57 mark of the second quarter for the game’s first points.

A 62-yard punt return by Campos about two minutes later gave JDHS a 13-0 lead heading into the break. Notre Dame had two first-half touchdowns called back because of penalties while the Crimson Bear defense recorded five sacks in the first two quarters and eight for the game.

It didn’t take Notre Dame long to get the chains moving on its first possession of the night but it was all for naught.

Ante Milanovic-Litre ripped off a 57-yard run all the way to the Bears’ 19-yard line on the Jugglers’ second play from scrimmage. After moving up to the JDHS 4-yard line the Bears’ defense stiffened up and a sack by Stefan Jones made it third-and-goal from the 11, and the Jugglers turned the ball over on downs on the next play.

The teams traded possessions throughout the first half with Juneau-Douglas finally getting across the goal line after a 10-play, 57-yard drive. Fenumiai carried six straight times, punching it in from a yard out for a 7-0 Bears lead after an Adam Soto point after touchdown.

The Bears forced a three-and-out and Demetrius Campos fielded the punt at about the 38-yard line of JDHS, sprinted left and raced down the sideline for the Bears’ second touchdown in two minutes for a 13-0 lead after the PAT failed.

Campos then extended the lead to 20-0 after taking the opening kick of the second half back about 80 yards for a score.

Samson Nauer then intercepted a Joseph Gabriele offering and returned it about 40 yards for a 27-0 JDHS lead with 10:12 left in the third quarter.

Luke Macdonald got the Jugglers on the board with a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and the Bears answered as Campos caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Fenumiai for his third score of the game.

Fenumiai then found Sean Niumataevalu on a 28-yard scoring strike for his second touchdown pass, and Danny Spagnuolo connected with Michael Aranzaso on a 28-yard touchdown pass to set the final score.

Juneau-Douglas improved to 5-1 on the year with West Valley visiting the capital city on Friday in a showdown for the Railbelt Conference lead. The Wolfpack trounced Lathrop 60-0 on Saturday.
