JDHS alumni Walker nominated

JDHS alumna student athlete Amber Walker has been nominated for Mid-American Conference women’s volleyball defensive player of the week. Walker is a junior defensive specialist, or libero, at Northern Illinois University. Walker led the Huskies in digs during their 3-1 week as they ended an eight-match, 12-day road trip with a 7-1 mark. On the week, she averaged 4.64 digs per set, had just four errors in 74 serve reception attempts, and helped the Huskies hold their opponents to a .234 attack percentage. In a sweep at Milwaukee, she notched a career-best 21 digs and was perfect in 31 reception attempts. In a 3-0 win at Lamar, she had 10 digs and 14 flawless receptions. In a 3-1 loss against Texas A&M she tallied 12 digs and had only three errors in 27 reception attempts. In a 3-1 win at Stephen F. Austin, she broke her previous career high by totaling 22 digs and had just one error in 12 reception attempts as she compiled her ninth straght match with 10 or more digs.

New hoops coach

JDHS graduate (1996) Robert Casperson has been appointed the new head coach for the Crimson Bears. Casperson takes over from coach Steve Potter who announced his retirement this summer. Potter spent 18 years with the JDHS program, five as head coach with a 91-45 record and five consecutive Region V 4A Tournament Championships. Casperson began with the JDHS program in ‘99 and became freshman coach in 2000 amasing an 85-12 record. He led the JV team since ‘07 and has a cumulative record of 92-20. He also has coached Floyd Dryden Middle School and worked with the local Hooptime organization. Coach Casperson is a member of the Alaska Association of Bsketball Coaches. he earned his Associates in Arts and Sciences at Shoreline Community College, and Bachelor of Liberal Arts Degree with an emphasis in Social Science from the University of Alaska Southeast. He also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from UAS He is a 6th grade Language Arts/Social Studies teacher at FDMS and is married with two children. Look for an interview closer to the basketball season.
