JDHS tennis team defeats five Fairbanks schools

The Juneau-Douglas tennis team returned from six scrimmage matches in Fairbanks last weekend with valuable experience, including competition against powerhouses West Valley and Lathrop.


“We played all six high schools there,” JDHS coach Amy Skilbred said. “It was good to have that competition. We won five of six matches.”

The Crimson Bears’ mixed doubles team of Emma Good and Johnny Joyce won all their matches, and the girl’s doubles team of Cassidy Davenport and Marlena Sloss continued to demonstrate the consistently strong performance they had against the Anchorage teams earlier in the season.

On Friday, West Valley beat JDHS 5 to 2. In girls singles JDHS’ Dorothy Brent defeated Robin Lockwood 6-4, 6-3. In mixed doubles Good and Joyce defeated Catherine Sample and Thomas Lees 6-4, 6-2. A highlight match was in girls doubles, WVHS’ Nettie Larson and Jill Phillips defeated Sloss and Davenport 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 10-5.

JDHS beat Monroe 6-1 on Friday. JDHS’ Marc Heifetz defeated Ryan Burke 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-8; and Joyce defeated Justin Antoneseu 6-0, 6-1. In girls singles, JDHS’ Rebekah Badilla defeated Madison Marlow 6-0, 6-0 and in girls doubles JDHS’ Jade Pilcher and Taylor Flannagan defeated Mary Foster and Kayla Raunhorst 6-2, 6-1. In boy’s doubles Hunter Haman and Daniel Jones defeated JDHS’ Johnny Connolly and Randon Calderwood 6-0, 2-6, 10-6. In mixed doubles, Brent and Edric Carrillo defeated Jordyn Therriault and Win Ostanik 4-6, 6-4, 10-3. In mixed doubles JDHS’ Joyce and Davenport defeated Justin Antoneseu and Madison Marlow 6-0, 6-1.

JDHS next beat Hutchinson 6-0. Joyce defeated Nico Wehner 8-2. Carillo defeated Brian Hume 8-1. Zander Hoke and Billy Holbrook defeated Sam Zaia and Ben Leslie 8-4. Sloss defeated Lynette Thompson 8-4. Good and Pilcher defeated Kona Dart and Elizabeth Howe 8-0. Flannagan and Calderwood defeated Gabriel Madore and Stephania Kremer 8-2.

JDHS beat Lathrop 4-1 on Saturday. Jay Kasteller defeated JDHS’ Heifetz 8-5. Hoke and Holbrook defeated Aven Bross and Zach Vehmeier 8-3. Brent defeated Yiting Zheng 8-5. Sloss and Davenport defeated Nicole Rogers and Tori Toms 8-2. Pilcher and Flannagan defeated Amber Lien and Micole Rogers 6-0. Good and Joyce defeated Macenzie Calvillo and Alex Jordan 8-4.

Juneau next beat North Pole 4-2 and Ben Eielson 6-0. Heifetz defeated Dahlin Lutz 8-6. Calderwood and Connolly defeated Devante Owen and Drew Daack 8-2. Connolly and Hoke defeated Dahlin Lutz and Daack 8-3. Sloss defeated Sarah Patterson 8-0.

Flannagan and Pilcher defeated Aubry Swammy and Marissa Crawford 9-7. Carrillo and Badilla defeated Kylee Yee and Sam Riggs 8-0.

The Region V tournament is currently underway at the Juneau Racquet Club. Play begins at 4:30 p.m. each day. The girls’ doubles final is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and boys’ doubles final is Tuesday at 8 p.m. The boys’ singles final is Sunday at 9 a.m., girls’ final Sunday at 11 a.m., and mixed doubles finals Sunday at 1 p.m.
